She uses samples from two different sources, both removed from her current audience, and presents them in a way that is not only appealing from an entertainment stand point but also as a modern feminist anthem. This particular example of remix \u00a0is also compelling as Lessig brings ups the different ways quotes are cited across varying media. Beyonc\u00e9 uses the typical &#8220;ft.&#8221; title to reference her quotation of Adichie&#8217;s speech within the song. What&#8217;s interesting is there&#8217;s no formal acknowledgement of the\u00a0<em>Star Search<\/em> clip also used, again begging the question when and where citation is important an appropriate in different forms of media.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beyonc\u00e9 - ***Flawless ft. This idea lends itself to the song <em>Pretty Hurts<\/em>, also on the album. It links the song to\u00a0feminist ideas of the\u00a0negative impacts\u00a0of viewing women in a superficial light.\u00a0By association, Beyonc\u00e9 herself becomes a feminist icon. The sampling of Adichie&#8217;s speech becomes not only an artistic choice but also a profitable one for Beyonc\u00e9 in a time when feminism and being feminist is popularized.<\/p>\n<p>In the song, Adichie&#8217;s message is cut up, piecing together various &#8220;highlights&#8221;. As a result, the message of a thirty minute TED talk becomes condensed and palatable to Beyonce&#8217;s younger demographic.\u00a0Adichie and feminism are brought forward in front of an audience that might otherwise be ignorant to what seem like a dry, scholarly and dated topic.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Star Search - Girls Tyme with Beyonce\" width=\"625\" height=\"469\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gWXPl18psZA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Now, while\u00a0Adichie&#8217;s speech in\u00a0<em>***Flawless<\/em> brings new energy to the aforementioned areas, the sampling of Beyonc\u00e9&#8217;s stint on\u00a0<em>Star Search<\/em> seems to rework history. What might have previously been seen as a failing, her group lost, is now seen as a triumph.
